Journey to Cape of Good Hope

The next morning a van came to pick us up along with others for a full day excursion south to the Cape of Good Hope. The scenery along the way was spectacular.

Our first stop was at Hout Bay.No one decided to go to Seal Island so we browsed the craft stalls. One lady had creatively displayed hershark teeth necklaces on hooks on plastic models. As I used to teach Crafts Your Business in Ottawa I was aware of just how important it is tosales to display your craft effectively.

We watched a chap feed a huge seal by mouth. The timing for both man and seal was excellent. They had obviously done this many times. We returned to the van.Seeing the bay from the opposite side the guide pointed out Seal Island to the left of the pointed rock. From here wecontinued along winding roads rock faces sometimes held back by wiremesh barricades.

The scenery was as beautiful as the Oregon coast:the difference between the two, being that there are no shark spotters along the United States coastline. We passed by an Ostrich farm, not as interesting having seen an ostrich while on safari.

Passing by a lady in a colourful caftan offering a variety of crafts,we soon turned off at Cape Point Road. All along the route from Cape Town were the numerous signs warning people about the Cape(Chacma in Afrikkans) Baboons! There are around 340 baboons in 20 to 30 troupes around Cape Town. They are a protected species under South Africanlegislation, but their persistent pursuit of food often leads to conflicts with local residents.National Park rangers have had to kill problem baboons that have become too aggressive, but there have been no recent cases of a baboon attacking a person.Primatologists say baboons get as much nutrition from a half loaf of discarded bread as from what they forage infour hours in the under growth, and that they easily get used to eating humanfood. At Cape Point there are baboon monitors who crack whips to scare baboons away from the restaurant area. But the surrounding roads are harder to police.Cape Chacma, are one of the largest sub species of baboon and are distinguished by their long downward sloping faces.Afully grown male can weigh up to 44kg(97lbs) and have canine teeth aslong as two inches.

Although one could walk up to the light house we chose the funicular. What a clear view we had from the top.Looking east we couldsee the waves splashing on a rocky reef where the British East Indian Trading Company had lost a number of ships.I imagine that it would befascinating for divers to explore.Looking down the almost vertical drop,a multi-coloured ribbon of white foam, vibrant turquoise blue bordered by sapphire blue water, was spectacular.

After buzzing around their gift shop I purchased a pair of copperenameled Africa continent earrings for myself,as well as a Cape of Good Hope souvenir spoon and we made our way back to the van.In ten minutes we were back down to sea level where everyone was anxious to get their photo taken at the Cape of Good Hope sign.Wehad a few minutes to enjoy the wildness of the sea, before continuing on our excursion.I had spent some time in a gift shop at Johannesburg airport before flying to Hoedspruit and had looked through a book about Cape Town.I noticed the photo of the brightly coloured stucco buildings and another of Jackass Penguins.I had always associated penguins inan icy Antarctica environment so was surprised to see them pictured ona sandy beach.I noticed a bit in the book that said they were originally called Jackass(a friend at home told me that they tend to bray like adonkey).Later they were simply re-named African Penguins as to beless insulting.I’m sure even penguins don’t like to be Jackasses! At Simon’s Town our driver pulled into the parking lot and we ventured downthe board walk. This was a whole new experience for us.Rounding thecorner, there they were:So adorable, standing about 18 inches high.Turning away from the beach, finally time to return to our van,I couldn’t resist taking a photo of mom with babies, exiting their nest in thesand.

When looking up information about these birds,I learned a lot so have included it in my journal.

  A Visit to Kirstenbosch Gardens

Almost at the end of our day trip,we visited Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town. For those of you who have been to Vancouver Island’s Butchart Gardens with grassy formal lawns and flower beds, you would find this garden very different. It environs present a more wild landscape. With Table Mountain as its backdrop, walk through with us as we discovera my riad of different plants. From the showy pink Proteus to Pincush-ions(a kind of Protea) in a variety of colours to Clivia Miniata varying from yellows through oranges to flame coloured reds it was an interesting and informative walk.
